Classes and Workshops

The following is a list of upcoming classes and workshops coming to my Portugal studio soon. More ceramics classes and workshops from guest artists will be added soon. Be sure to sign up for emails to learn when new classes are added.

There are also limited membership opportunities for those who wish to work independently and have flexible studio access, dedicated space and a key to come and go as they please.

Beginner & Intermediate Wheel Throwing

Wheel Throwing

There are three class options for wheel throwing. One is a five week intensive that meets twice a week, and the other two are 8 week classes that meet once a week. Choose the time/class that's best for you (click the buttons below for more detailed class descriptions).

Max students: 4 /Minimum: 2

Choose from Three Class Schedules:

  • 5 Week Beginner and Intermediate Throwing- meets Mondays AND Fridays 10:00- 14:00 February 3- March 5. 10 Classes/35 hours total FULL
  • 8 Week Beginner Throwing- meets once a week on Tuesdays 10:00-13:30 February 2- March 23. 8 classes/24 hours total
  • 8 Week Beginner Throwing- meets once a week on Wednesdays, 17:00-20:30 February 4- March 25. 8 classes/24 hours total

Summary

Includes firing of 8 small pieces, one bag of clay (more clay and firings can be purchased as needed), and use of select studio glazes.

  • In this wheel throwing intensive, we will learn the basics of wheel throwing: wedging clay, centering, raising the walls, and cutting a piece from the wheel, trimming leather hard pieces, attaching handles. The importance of cleaning up clay to avoid clay dust will also be taught.
  • The goals in the class are to make cups, mugs, bowls. A demonstration for each will be provided.

Saturday

Hand Building Workshops

Max students 6. Min 2

These workshops can be done as individual classes or you can sign up for all four, plus the glazing workshop for a bulk class discount (180€ for all rather than 205€).

Intro to Clay: Let’s Make Pinch Pots  40€  Saturday February 7, 10:00-1:30 pm

This is one of the oldest and easiest ways to make pots, simply by starting with a ball of clay and pinching from the center out to make the walls of the form.

It’s a great introduction to working with clay and we’ll learn how to make a small cup and a bowl, by slightly varying the technique. At the end of class you can choose a color of glaze, and Nicole will glaze and fire the pieces for you, or you can choose to glaze your own pieces or sign up for the glaze workshop on March 21 to glaze your own.

Building Mugs with Slabs 50€ ------------------------Saturday, February 21, 10-1:30

Make a mug using a pattern and slabs.

  • Rolling even slabs
  • Slip and score slabs together
  • Making and attaching handles

 At the end of class you can choose a color of glaze, and Nicole will glaze and fire the pieces for you, or you can choose to glaze your own pieces and attend the glaze workshop on March 21 (+ 15€).

Plates, Bowls and Platters made with slabs and molds 50€ --Saturday March 7, 10:00-14:00

Make a plate, platter or bowl using slabs and molds. We will use stamps, slip trailing and rollers to decorate.

  • We will roll patterns into the slabs, before creating forms with the molds
  • Adding a foot to trays, or handles to serving trays 

 At the end of class you can choose a color of glaze, and Nicole will glaze and fire the pieces for you, or you can choose to glaze your own pieces and attend the glaze workshop on March 21.

Coiling to build a Pot 50€ -------------------------- -- Saturday March 14, 10:00-14:00

This class will focus on coil building techniques. We’ll learn how to roll even coils from balls of clay, and how to attach coils to build a pot. Students can choose to build a bowl, cup, or vase.

At the end of class you can choose a color of glaze, and Nicole will glaze and fire the pieces for you, or you can choose to glaze your own pieces and attend the glaze workshop on March 21 (+15€)

Glazing workshop 15€ -------------------------------------Saturday March 21, 10:00-14:00

This is your opportunity to learn about glazing ceramics, and glaze the work you have made in any of the handbuilding workshops. You will learn techniques for painting, dipping and layering glazes.
