come make art in Portugal!
Artist Residency
Have you ever dreamed of having a quiet place to disconnect from your everyday obligations, and the time to focus on making art? A Villa do Barro (The House of Clay) is our residency house and studio nestled in Salgueiro-Carvalhal, a small agricultural village in the Silver Coast area of Portugal. The population of this tiny village is around 450, and rush hour consists of tractor traffic, going to and from apple and pear orchards, and vineyards.
The second floor balcony offers beautiful sunrise views, and sunset from the back yard is pretty wonderful too. The house sits over the studio, for easy access whenever inspiration strikes, any time of day or night.
About
Villa Do Barro
Our home and the artist residency house, are located 50 minutes north of Lisbon in a tiny village called Salgueiro (Carvalhal, Bombarral). We are 20 minutes from Caldas da Rainha, a UNESCO World Heritage City for Ceramics; 15 minutes to Obidos, think medieval castle UNESCO City of Literature; 30 minutes to the ocean; 12 minutes to the small city of Bombarral, and 10 minutes from the Buddha Eden Garden. There are also several amazing things to see within an hours drive from our place: Nazare, Tomar, Sintra, Alocbaça, to name a few. So while the home and studio are remote, we are close to many inspiring locations. If you'd like to explore we recommend renting a car.

About
The Studio: AKA Where the Magic Happens
Like most studios, ours is a constant work in progress. We're boot strapping this thing and learning and building as we go. Our dream is to create a community creative space for artists from all over, but if there's one thing we've learned in our first year in Portugal, it's that EVERYTHING here happens very slowly, and we're trying to embrace that. So while we have big plans, here's the layout of the studio now.
The studio is split between a large garage space, also known as Where the Magic Happens, and a room we affectionately call the In Between (as it's the room that connects our little house and the residency house).
The In Between has a wall of windows overlooking the patio, and we are slowly filling the room and the patio with plants.
- 5 electric pottery wheels
- Basic studio tools for wheel throwing and hand building projects
- shelving for storing projects
- damp boxes
- work table
- sinks inside and on the patio for clean up
Where the Magic Happens (aka The Garage) Don't be fooled by the fact that this space was once a garage for agricultural equipment, it's got high ceilings, windows, and a giant sliding door that opens up to all the good natural light. It's got the rest of the studio goods:
- slab roller
- 60 liter top loading electric kiln (fires to cone 6)
- 198 liter (7 cubic feet) top loading electric kiln coming in 2026 (we have the kiln but not enough electricity to fire it... YET)
- Glaze area with minerals for mixing glazes, and a few buckets of our in house made glazes.
- large work table
- wedging and reclaim areas
